Win Where It Counts

One month into 2016, you already may be re-evaluating your goals and resolutions for the year. Maybe you started out strong in the gym. Maybe, like me, you started a home organization project and the dust hasn’t quite settled yet. Or, maybe, just maybe your passion for fashion or lightweight addiction to Starbucks is still hitting your bank account when building up your savings was going to be your claim to fame this year.

 

Whatever it is, it’s fair to say that we all have the best intentions when it comes to making choices to help us live our best lives. I’ve started enough new years and set enough goals to know that a critical key to success is that we don’t go at it alone. Now, when something is important to me and I’m planning to integrate it into my lifestyle, one of the first things I do is find someone – an accountability partner – I can count on to help me stay focused.

 

A few years ago, I wanted to recommit to writing more. I’ve always loved to write and as the desire to formally become a writer came to me, I jumped in head first going to writer’s conferences, buying books on writing, and getting all types of tools and resources to help me step up my writing game. But it didn’t take long for that thing to happen that happens to many of us. As I got busier, my excitement started to wane, and I started to fall off. A co-worker, who also shared my passion for writing, suggested that we become accountability partners. How simple and brilliant.

 

From there on out, we shared a timeline of goals, and met or communicated regularly to share progress – in most cases, examples of what we had been writing. Being accountable to myself and someone else was a major game changer. And, ever since, I’ve had accountability partners for my business, fitness, travel, financial and other goals.

 

If you’re like me, you’re not just interested in winning this year – but you want to win every day of every year for the rest of your life! Here are three more tips I’ve found – like an accountability partner – that have helped me stay accountable to myself:

 

  1. Write it down. This one is tried and true. When we write things down, we commit them to paper, but also to our selves and the entire universe. Part of what motivates me to blog is that it’s a fun and simple way for me to stay committed to writing every day. A journal, vision board or notes in your computer are a great way to reinforce the thoughts in your head and the dreams in your heart.

  2. Speak on it. I’m convinced that words are either a reflection of our joy or our pain. If there is a something I’m passionate about doing or achieving, I speak good words toward and I keep negativity away from it. This not only means doubtful statements I could make. I also steer clear of people who don’t have positive things to say. I could (and probably will) write a whole post about this, but negative words are the fastest way to kill your dreams and positive words are like an express elevator to success. Every single morning I look in the mirror and say: Good morning. Today is a great day for you to win. Whatever you want or need, I’m right here with you, and I’m going to help you get it! It’s nice to hear it from others, but just to make sure I stay on point, I speak it to myself.

  3. Make a date with it. Just as we schedule hair and nail appointments, movie nights, happy hours, weekend getaways and meetings at work, it is important to schedule the other highly important things that matter to us. I am not a fan of working out, at all! But I have recommitted to my physical health and wellness like never before. So guess what, working out is not negotiable. Instead of faking myself out about running for an hour on the treadmill, I started to schedule classes that I felt I would enjoy. From yoga to Zumba to boxing, these classes inspire me to show up because they are at a specific time, they involve other people, they cost money that I don’t want to waste, and most of all – they’re fun!

 

Obviously, there are so many other things we can do to reinforce our commitment to our hopes, goals and dreams. These are just a few things I personally have found to be tried-and-true. Even if we don’t share common interests, I believe these suggestions are universal and can be applied to just about anything. At the end of the day, the objective is for us all to stay inspired and to win where it counts.
